Articles: More surgery for Kevin this week?

Tuesday, November 04, 2008 - 12:33 PM, (385 Reads)

Few of you may know it, but Kevin is scheduled to have further surgery this week, this time for a bilateral cranioplasty. The plan is to insert a mesh over which bone can grow to fill the gap in the right side of his skull. The left side is more problematic. The piece of skull removed on this side was much bigger than on the left and was replaced around a year ago. Throughout the course of this year, the plate has progressively sunk, leaving a very obvious ridge/indentation at the very top of his forehead (see the photos). At this stage we don't know why this has happened, and we are keen to find out more... but it is apparent that the rate of sinking is increasing and that the plate needs to be replaced or supported in order to provide proper protection to Kevin’s brain, especially in the event of a fall.

We should know more by Thursday, if not Wednesday night, but in the meantime please join with me in offering Alison and Kevin your support and hopes for uneventful surgery this week. You can text Alison on her mobile (+61 407544849) – it is better to text than to phone in order that she does not have to pay charges for incoming phone calls.

Meantime, I am happy to also be able to report that Kevin has been making great strides in his progress in recent weeks, ever since his recurrent urinary tract problems were treated. He has been laughing, smiling, interacting with others, talking progressively more, and even reading out loud! And all this despite the problems with his skull! I am full of admiration for all that Kevin and Alison have achieved and for the way they continue to climb the hurdles that keep popping up in front of them. We can all celebrate what they are achieving, but I cannot overstate how important it is for them to receive strength from the knowledge that you are thinking of them and, since they are not mind-readers, they will only know if YOU make direct contact, so please do!
