Articles: More Surgery for Kev

Monday, October 22, 2007 - 09:34 PM, (1061 Reads)

Kev began to become sleepier over a few days, then as the story below says he has been returned to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctor service. He has become increasingly unresponsive.
However when I asked him to give me a hug good-bye tonight, at great effort he put his arm around me and held me tight. We prayed together thanking for the many blessings we do have and for peace and calmnes to be with Kevin and those who love him. As I did this he held me tighter at the appropriate times. When I had to go he released his embrace when I asked him to. This shows even though so unwell he continues to fight.

He has been reveiwed by the consultant, Mr Honeybul today and is scheduled for theatre tomorrow. He will have a shunt put into the ventricles of the brain and this will drain into his abdo. At he same time the doctors will return the bone flap to avoid pressure on the brain.

I thank all of you who have been in contact and ask you all to keep in contact, it gives us both the wind in our sails to carry on. I do share messages and calls with Kevin and this gives me something positive and happy to share with him.

I would also like everyone to know that the wheelchair van was generously sold to us for half price by one of our guests families, which was so very kind of them.We enter the next phase and hope that Kev does not have complications of infection or rejection to the materials in his body.

Shall keep you all posted.

This is a major step Kevin -- well done! The shunt should make an enormous difference, and we hope that things keep progressing well over the next few days. Much love, as always.

Day five post op and all has been going well, yet not as responsive this morning. I was very distressed to find Kev had been restrained overnight for no apparent reason and without consent from myself or a Doctor.
Kev spoke again today and was helpful and initiating and assisting in some personal care. He was happy to leave the ward for a walk by responding with a big Kev grin and nod of the head.
Unfortunately he had a 3.5 min siezure at 1750 Aus time. This has left in a typical post-ectil (siezure) state. There will be a CT scan and EEG tomorrow. A really sad turn of advents, both the nurses and myself were upset by this episode. Hopefully we will detect the trigger and deal with it and Kev can continue in his recovery.
I am very tired emotionally from the rollercoster we are on, and really plead that all of you who read this send in your name and some of your thoughts, at present it is a lonely journey.
It has been five months since the accident and in some ways my life has wizzed by on hold and in others it has been an eternity.
My love to all who are reading this, and I realise you all have full days that are busy with your lives, even if we could here about this it would be wonderful.
I see how many people have read Kev's updates and would love to know who you are.
Love, Kevin and Alison

Alison, we'd love it if you can pass on our love to Kevin on his birthday today. Happy Birthday Kevin!

We had fully intended to send a card for him to look at, but as I'm sure you're aware Alison life's events have a strange habit of overtaking your best of intentions. In our case it is a bazaar being held at Aska's kindergarten the day after tomorrow (Sat) and following volunteering our services several weeks ago, the demands are increasing everyday. Masami is there everyday and has so far assisted in making several thousand (yes, you read right) biscuits and cakes under the rule of a draconian team leader.

I took half a day off work today to help out and now feel totally drained and expoited. Poor Masami!

We hope the positive feedback from everyone is helping give Kev some variety in his recovery.

    Love,
    Jay, Masami, Aska, & Zoe

I have been meaning to do an update, so here I am.
Kev continues to have 'vacant siezures' and has not spoken or smiled again. He needs alot of prompting to be responsive. Marcus, Renae, Natahlia and Brenna came to visit yesterday which he enjoyed.
Kev is on the list for Shanton Park, where he will participate in a 6 week trial of rehabilitation. If nothing else this may make it easier for me to care for him.
The emotional roller-coaster continues and I am fortunate to have Sue and Dave and their girls to stay with in Perth.
Shall keep you posted, a little afraid to share any good news in-m case it is short lived!
    Love to all.
