Articles: Climbing Mountains

Tuesday, August 28, 2007 - 01:58 PM, (1001 Reads)

After weeks of stomach problems, and resulting breakdown in skin integrity, Kev is very low in spirits and has gone back a few steps. RPH will try for 2 weeks intensive physio (45 mins per day), if there is not a positive improvement rehab is not an option at this stage. This means we will be ... taking Kevin home to do what we can. It is a very dissapointing set-back at this time, not to mention overwhelming as he is need of full nursing cares.

He has not spoken for some time and appears to be withdrawing more.

We feel bringing Kev home is an option we must give our best, in an attempt to lift his spirits and hopefully some cognitive skills.

The last few weeks have proved to be physically and emotionally very painful for Kev, but has shown that he has physical strength and capabilities.

We continue with the osteopathy, his neck is in very bad form has a toticollis. Stiffening to the right arm is more pronounced, typical of CVA, with decreased circulation.

Kevin has had two lots of accupucnture both of which have had a positive outcome. Following the last treatment on Saturday, Kev was emotional listening to Kendie's voice on the phone (he has held the phone at times to listen to conversation) he then hagged me and stroked my hair! These occurances are not as frequent now and it was a joy to get a smile from him last night when I 'gave him a telling off' to try harder, he gave me a big grin, first since he saw Mum last Wed.

The nurse unit manager and OT feel it will be the best move to take him home. We will have some day leave in Perth this weekend.

We have had many mountains to climb in the last month, alot of energy being used to protect and gain rights that should be standard for every client and carer.

I will be gald not to have to fight these unneccessary, however essential, battles. These have frustrated, upset, and exhausted me far more than the initial accident.

Now our next moutain will be one of endurance, flexibility and pre-planning. Discharge planning has begun!!

My love to everyone and many thanks for your support, I know life is busy and some are unable to touch base with me, but please if you have time, a few words do alot to keep us going.

Lots of Love,
Kevin, Alison and family

Thanks for the news, Alison. Although not all good there are some positive things are starting to happen and so glad that you are at last being listened to a bit more. Is this because the consultant is now more involved?
We will be keen to see any changes in progress with a bit of home leave although this will obviously be a real strain for yourself and the rest of the family. Will you be able to have home assistance provided by the Health authorities?
On another note, we are in Invercargill and met with Glenda briefly and will be spending more time with her, Tracy, Anton, Amie (did I spell that right?) and baby Chloe. Glenda is then coming up to Dunedin with us where we will drop her off with Kirstin and family on our way home. More later, Dad & Margaret

I'm so sorry that you have had such a battle with the hospital. You obviously still have a very long, hard road ahead. I am in the UK at the moment, returning to France Sunday evening French time, but do send email or text message (Paul will send it on to me by email) to me whenever you want. All our love and thoughts are with you. xxxxxxxx

What a disapointment for you all. Lets hope that the next 2 weeks brings some positive change and Kevin responds to the physio. I guess it is enough to just think about the immediate 2 weeks at this stage and see what happens before making any decisions as to the next step.

Our love to you all as always.
Glenda and Sid.

Yes, I am one of those rascals that hasn't touched base for a while.

Thanks so much for the update Alison. I hope the move down south works out well. I think it would really help Kev to get back into some familar surroundings. Smells and sounds are so much more ingrained in our memories that it is sure to help his brain redevelopment. I only hope that both he and you all are physically able to handle the challenge/stress.

I feel that he was really able to improve a little while we were there and that may have been aided by the little extra stimulation we were able to give to his routine life in hospital. If anyone else is in two minds about when to go and visit, sooner is better. It will really help his brain to repair those broken connections and Alison and family would love the distraction and support too.

Lots of love and wishes,
Jay Masami Aska and Zoe
