Articles: Other stories from Perth

On the way to the hospital, some strange australian creature stared at us!

Our trip to Perth started in Sydney with Alison's ute and continued with the help of a GPS through to Adelaide by way of the Murray River. It was about 400k a day which was comfortable.

The first stop was at Gundagai where we found a typical old small hotel, currently running as a B&B. The bed was brass and quite high; we had to climb in to it. Breakfast was served in the butler's pantry and as we had the whole place to ourselves we played at being Upstairs and Downstairs.

Another nights accommodation was in the paddle steamer, Murray River Queen - photo coming up>>>>>

We had the top luxury suite on the top deck at a reduced price if we didn't use the spa! In Adelaide we fronted up to the Indian Pacific train and were shown to our cabin. This is in the dining car (left). Other photos are in Places & Travel; Perth 07.

It was raining cats and dogs in Perth when we arrived and this weather set the scene for the next couple of weeks. Now and then blue sky would appear for a short while, but we never got out of our winter clothes!

Perth is a lovely place, full of green parks and trees and the Swan River was very picturesque. The apartment we had was in the CBD and we quickly found there were free buses around this whole area. They arrived at designated bus stops every 7 minutes during the week and so we were able to get around back and forth from the hospital and shopping malls very easily. This photo was taken in a bus which was full at the time being after school.

With the generous offer of a vehicle from the Bunbury Home, we were able to make the long drive down to Albany where I met up with an old childhood friend whom I hadn't seen for 40 years! We both must have looked a bit different to each other. She lived in Cooke Beach about 1/2 an hour away from Albany and although her place was the average 3 bedroom brick (Mt Roskill) home, owing to current values it was worth over 1 million now!

The beach at the bottom of the road about 2 minutes walk away illustrates the increase in value. It was wide and long, pure white sand and the water was clear and turquoise. Fascinating place, Albany and extremely attractive. Without ties here in NZ, we would shift there without a care.

There were supposed to be kangaroos all around, even round the house but we didn't see any much to the amazement of our hosts. We did see several pods of whales just off the coastline which was exciting.

It seems a long way now being back home, to Western Australia - and it is! But with the help of this site, we can keep in touch. Keen to hear about whatever is happening over there!
