Articles: Kevin in serious motorbike accident

Wednesday, May 30, 2007 - 09:09 PM, (1521 Reads)

On Tuesday evening, 29 May, Kevin came off his motorbike in Bunbury and is now in a critical condition with serious head injuries in the Intensive Care Unit of Royal Perth Hospital. He is comatose and underwent two lots of surgery on Wednesday in efforts to relieve the build-up of pressure in his brain.

Alison and their girls, together with other members of the family on both sides, have travelled to Perth to be with Kevin at this terrible time. At this stage we can all only take things an hour at a time. The months ahead are going to be extremely difficult, especially for Alison and the girls. Please leave your messages of support for them all here.

For more information, you can mail Kerry or Glenda in the first instance.

I talked to Alison and Renae 8:30 their time today and they tell me that Kevin is serious but stable. He was just going off for more xrays at that time.
Regarding going to support Alison she thought that she had lots at present with all that were already there. She suggested that it would be great to have visits from family (and others) from time to time during Kevin's recovery, rather than a heap of people all at once at present.
Seems a good thought to me and I am calling Alison daily to at least have contact so that she knows we are there (here?). All our love and thoughts are with you Kevin.

Latest update. John rang Alison 2pm our time (10am Perth time).Kevin ICP has been stabilised and he is having gastric feeds. Medication is being reduced gradually. He will be in the Critical Unit for 3 - 4 weeks and then moved to rehab which could take as much as a year. The Police are investigating the theory of a hit and run and seeking information. Renae has been particularly distressed as she was the one contacted to go to the accident scene. Our thoughts go to Renae and hope she senses our support to find the strength to deal with this traumatic experience. Support of course, for Alison who is visiting the hospital so many times with no visible improvement obvious. Doctors at the hospital are giving first-class medical help and skills.

The ward receptionist at work's son was at RP hospital 10 years ago in what appears to be exactly the same situation as Kevin (except he was hit by a motorbike). He was 29 at the time. He too had a series of operations including having part of his skull frozen to reattach later. He also had part of his brain removed. He was in ICU for about 5 weeks and about another 3 months in hospital and then rehab, during which he came back to NZ. He has no memory of the accident or the trauma of being in ICU. He has a very good quality of life now. The receptionist told me the staff at RPH were absolutely fantastic.

Renae, you have put your feelings down here very well. You have truly been having a terrible time, but I hope that the love of all your extended family has been of some help. At this stage nothing can take your fear or pain away, and we all feel fear and pain too, though it must be so much more intense for you and your mum and sisters. I know that your dad loves you all very much -- he has told us at different times in the past and it is easy to see it when he is with you. Paul and I have great memories of your dad and we are very, very fond of him. All our love, and all our hugs, come to you.

Thanks for the latest update Renae and Alison. Lots of us are going on the site and accessing this item on Kevin so that we can look for any updates you might post, so there won't be a message every time someone takes a look. Of course there will be lots who are checking but haven't left a message -- it is often difficult for people to know what to say or to find the words to express their thoughts and feelings in circumstances such as these. Still, I agree that just little messages to say who has been here will help to give you lots of support, so I encourage visitors not to feel shy -- you don't have to say a lot, just send your love.

Thanks for the update Renae. I have just spoken to Joy and she will be leaving for the airport shortly to carry our care to you all in person.
I thought I should repeat a comment I made on the "chater box", as Joy also said she felt the same about it. That is:
"Jay and Shaun I am sure that when you set the site up you never envisaged the it would become a "virtual" lifeline. THANK YOU both."
I am sure that others feel the same also.

hi everyone,

It's been two days since they took Dad off the sedation so basically he is in his own coma now, not a medically induced one. Still no real responce he is breathing pretty much by himself now but still on the life support of course due to being in the coma, it just pushes him to keep taking breaths. Yesterday i was stretching his feet and felt a little pushing, the doctors say this is a reflex but is still better than nothing, he has been reacting slightly and only sometimes to painfull stimuli on his feet, again reflex action.

He has been getting hicups and coughing slightly the last day and a half which they say is common. But this morning when i was talking to him he took a big sigh, maybe he is board with all my talk about nothing. Then when i went back in with him agan about half an hour ago he took another big sigh, this may just be coinsidence but i spose we dont know. (i never new i was that boring.)

He still has a tempreture but they have ruled out any infection and say it is just the pressure on his hyperthelmos (?spelling?) so it cant be controled. We are still just waiting to see what might happen, it may take days or weeks even months, just have to be patient.

Again thanks so much for all tthe messages they are so lovely to read,

Love Renae X

hi everyone,

Joy arrived safely Marcus and I picked her up from the airport on monday evening, she has been so fantastic getting things organised and helping in so many ways, that i was able to come home and get some sleep. I will head back to Perth tomorrow (friday 7th) to be with them and help out again.

Spoke to mum this morning and have some positive news, Dads fever is down and he is responding to the antibiotics, he is breathing by himself again. He got really tired the other day and they had to turn the life support machine up, but he is doing it by himself now. They took the probe out of his brain and he moved all his arms and legs head and neck (it must of hurt). He has been reacting to all painful stimuli. Mum also said that both herself and the nurse have seen dad trying to open his eyes. It's nothing huge but at least there is some responce, we still have to be patient.

I am really anxious to get back up there and be with him, but realise i have to rest too.

Thanks again to you all. Love Renae

UPDATE:
While speaking to Alison yesterday (7th) she asked me to put on the site a few brief details of Kevin's current condition and procedures.

On the 6th he had a tracheotomy to enable the tubes to be removed from mouth.
His chest infection was responding to antibiotics.
His blood presure is bouncing up and down rather erratically.
However taking those into account he is being classified as "Stable".

I will be speaking to Alison most days and will try to post any updates (that she wants me to) on the day.
