Articles: Campers Away!

Wednesday, March 28, 2007 - 01:41 AM, (873 Reads)

Recent good weather saw the Munro's packing food into the wee caravan's wee fridge and heaving dog stuff in the back of the truck. Fairlie was chosen for it's camping ground as it promised wireless internet all over the camp!

This proved to be incorrect as although they had several aerials around the strength of them was not enough to do anything with. Cheap from Taiwan! However, they had ethernet in the office.

As the days were hot and perfect, I enjoyed taking the dogs for walks twice a day down the Opihi River, falling in once myself and Milly had several shocking swims. In a fast flowing current she sailed downstream making no headway at all but her eyes were not frightened and she instinctively knew to drift sideways to the edge.

Next camping stop was Kurow where we went to look at a bigger caravan advertised. Very self contained with solar panels, generators, sky aerials, 2 tvs, underfloor heating etc etc. (we are still thinking). Kurow was lovely and only just over an hour away from home.... It has a huge hill to the south west of the wee town which cuts off the beautiful sun at 5pm but as we went to bed early and got up early - 6.30am - it didn't bother us. More walks down the braided Waitaki river (right)

We had to be careful not to go outside the Queens Chain as there was a gruff local and old farmer who owned the land. No notices about so you had to have a confrontation in order to find this out! We had two and after that, we were good friends what with John's good natured bantering and my 'name dropping' of well known people in the district (not to mention the many Munros. -- published book - Merino's, Matagouri and Munro's).

A pub dinner was made into an evening of entertainment with a local pipe band marching in the door, playing very well, piano accordian recitals, rugby (Blues v Waratahs) and horse racing! Of course, yours truly, couldn't help herself and did her own dancing recital of a sword dance. I'm 65, and should know better! This is a photo of the view from our caravan overlooking the river (left).
