Articles: The Goodbyes

Tuesday, March 06, 2007 - 10:26 AM, (885 Reads)

Family re-unions occur at funerals. All the way from Aussie is Alison and daughter Brenna (14) on the ferry to Waiheke.

From this point on, it became a joyful and not sad, rev-up! There were over 30 of the Munro relatives gathered to celebrate Beryl's life.

Just about all of June's family including Peter, the eldest, Eunice and husband Roger, Sara (Eunice's daughter) and Hadlee and Anita (twins, Peter's) Sara's brother, and of course, Merilyn, her husband and, daughter, Emma not to forget the flamboyant Desiree with her 1970's dark glasses and very high heels. Joy & Simon (with incredible guitar skills) and Karl who flew up specially from Wellington.

On the steps of the St John's Hall where the tea and 71 club sandwiches (Monday morning co-ordination) were served (along with other delicious delicacies) were Karl, Simon and Shaun (...'great cousins"). This was after the actual funeral which had it's funny moments as usual in the Munro family.............. HJM realised he had forgotten to pack his trousers and had to fit into Sid's ambulance trousers including the St John's belt. Alison with her skilful needle transferred the button to a more suitable place in the last 10 minutes!

The coffin, accompanied by 'The funeral Cortege' (left) almost being dropped, as the Bearers couldn't get past the chairs in the Hall.

A day or so later, we had the great idea of putting Kerry's beautiful bouquet on the grave after the grave had been filled in. Some set off from Esslin Road in the ambulance as Sid and Glenda were on duty and the rest in our hired car. A short way down the road and I said "Who has the flowers?"  We had 15 minutes to catch the vehicular ferry!

Racing back, collecting the bouquet, parking in the cemetery (the ambulance looked a little odd there!), but it all worked out.

Other photos to be found in Nana's folder. Brenna in a hammock, Goodbyes, Sid & Glenda swimming, more cousins, and 'Okay this is the final", a touching end to a lady of huge family significance.
