Articles: A Sad Passing

Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 11:00 PM, (1222 Reads)

At 10:10am on Thursday, February 22, 2007, at the age of 98 years old, our mother, grandmother, great grand mother, Florence Beryl Watson (Munro) passed away.  She will be mourned by all as she has always been a great source of strength for the family.

Family from all around the world (Australia, France, Japan and from Auckland to Invercargill) have been sending supportive messages and many were there in person to comfort her in her final days.

Our condolences go out to her children (June, Gwen, Margaret, and John) who, along with many others, were especially close to her.

Thank you everyone for your support in this difficult time.

If you have more photos of Nana to post here, please email them to sysadmin@munro.cc

Other than be thankful that Nana's suffering of the last weeks is over, let's all celebrate her long life; as Margaret put it: 'Say not in grief "she is no more", but live in thankfulness that she was'. Personally I have found Nana a great inspiration for many years, and while I will miss seeing her on my visits to New Zealand I will always remember with great fondness her blue eyes, curly white hair, her daredevil mini and scooter driving, her great independence, her artistic abilities and her smart dressing, and her love of crochet, plants and wholesome food! It is springtime here and so I shall buy a big bunch of daffodils today in Nana's honour and as a reminder of the big field of spring flowers next to her house in Warkworth.

As my mum put it to me, for all Nana's children, what a great privilege to have your mother for so many years. There are not many who can boast having had their mother around for over 70 and 80 years. I am sure you will all cherish the great memories you must all have of her. My love to you all.

This is now from Margaret Popenhagen: She says:
Earliest memories - Sister June & I were born in Sydney. We came to NZ with mother and father when I was 2 1/2 yrs old. We sailed on a ship called, The Manuka which was shipwrecked between Otago Harbour and Bluff, one year after we had made our journey to Invercargill where our grandparents farmed 100 acres of dairy farmland. Mum was a very good teacher, family-wise, she taught us everything that little girls need to know about scrubbing benches (with "Old Dutch") and more. She sewed (during the depression years) made clothes, knitted, baked and did everything necessary to make it easier for families living with no money, basically! She was a good disciplinarian but very fair on most occasions (except once!) She entertained all our cousins at holiday time and great fun if it was snowing! When she said, "no" she meant no. She saw that we all had a musical interest as we got older, June & Margaret played piano and Margaret, steel guitar!!!. Gwen played violin. A remembered saying that Beryl had on her wall in the lounge was: "Keep smiling....... it makes people wonder what you've been up to"!! I'll always remember her with love and smiles.

My sincerest condolences and love to the family. This is the end of an era. My belief, and that of Nana herself, is that she is now sleeping peacefully and awaiting Jehovah's merciful resurrection. When baby Robin died 9 years ago, Nana sent Kerry and Paul a scripture to comfort them and I want to use that same scripture now as a message of support to all the family: Numbers Chapter 6, verses 22-26. With all my love, Elaine.
