Articles: Diminishing horizons!

Sunday, January 21, 2007 - 07:53 AM, (990 Reads)

Is this a family trait? Looking for new horizons and revelling in the challenges of limited living spaces? Boats, caravans, vans, motorhomes! This is our new "Wee Gem": Its only 11metres but its Top, pops up to make full headroom but down, easy towing.

We purchased this in Invercargill (sorry Tracy and Anton - the weather was absolutely foul and we only had one day) and it was an absolute bargain. Good quality even after 29 years! As a 1978 model it has all the classic features of that age, brown floral lino, oval orange door window, but what could be nicer.

Put a yellow sheepskin on the floor, some second hand good cutlery in the drawer, a feather duvet with matching cover(donated by an admiring neighbour) and we are away! I listened to the next door traffic on the road and visualised the terrible events in Northland when a dutch couple were traumatised by 2 madmen and spent the first part of the night going over my black belt judo moves, but around 10pm drifted into a luxurious sleep on the thick foam mattress.

Next foray was when mist, cold and continuing bad weather was forecast on the Otago coast and we headed up into the Waitaki Lakes area. How beautiful.... The only disadvantage was the midges that hovered in a cloud around John's head. Not mine! I must have eminated the wrong smell.

Next place (around this beautiful lake and only 15 mins west) was Lake Benmore Camp which was a public ground but had the wonderful advantage of individual 'ensuites"! Each spot had electricity outlets, water, a toilet, shower and handbasin. The particular advantage of this camp was that it allowed dogs/pets!!! They had to be on a lead, of course and we got our hand slapped because both dogs somehow got off the lead and the next door neighbours (from North Otago) who had 4 young boys, were instrumental in complaining! However we didn't complain about their continuing loud arguments with their childrens behaviour.

Still, other lovely experiences were with delightful children coming around our campsite wanting to talk to us. Talking about the campsite - we had this 4 sided awning with a connection to the caravan - that we hadn't tried to put up. We were a bit disadvantaged by the fact we didn't have a hammer. We used a spade which seemed to break all the plastic pegs we found in the bag!  The ground was stoney and that made language quite appropriately stoney while hammering the pegs in.

The awning is actually very good and will hold another 4 keen Kampers if they want to join us! The weather, of course, was absolutely divine - hot, sunny - we had delicious coffee in Omarama in this lovely cafe called "The Wrinkly Ram") (8 mins away) and they not only agreed to let us tie the dogs up in the shade, but brought water out for them too!

Up a wee way was the river where I paddled with the dogs and saw a trout about a metre away from me! We didn't bring the rod or pay for a license but will next time!! on the way home...coffee stop.

Talk about retro!! Looks like a heap of fun and reminds of the caravan we bought to take up to our land up north all those years ago. The ad said 'ugly but comfortable' and it was.
