Articles: A Proud Moment

Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 08:05 PM, (1050 Reads)

This is The Medal! Burt Munro is the only New Zealander to have been selected into the American Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

June & John were on hand to receive this in Pickerington which is near Columbus, Ohio. There were two days of events in which both June & John (and sometimes, Merilyn) were asked to autograph posters, both Worlds Fastest Indian posters and a special poster made for the occasion with the 9 inductees. The public were invited on the Saturday as were 100's of beautiful motorbikes from all over which were judged in catagories. The music over the loudspeakers was from the 60's and the sun shone.

In the evening there was a dinner for all who were invited and the evening concluded with speeches from the Presenters and the Inductees accepting medals. ............ John was Burt's presenter

He had the whole marquee laughing and clapping particularly when he said (of June and himself) "Our father - (and pointing to the ceiling and then to the floor) who may or may not be"! He looked around the huge area and asked all those who had not seen the movie, to stand up. Three courageous people stood up and he pointed to each and said, "You can leave" You can leave!"

June came up to the podium looking small (most of the guys were tall and wide) and gave a pleasant and amusing small speech. Some people remarked that these two "made the show"! There was supposed to be film sent to TVNZ but the camera failed. The two reporters had made several tapes of June & John over the two days.

We had dinner with Merilyn and June. They now have left on the long journey to Fiji.

Further news: Nana is looking very well in her new rest home and joining in with the activites. She is still short of breath but doesn't have to go far and there is always someone to help.

We are now in Toronto and enjoying the friendly people. There is far less obesity here than in the States - it's positively horrifying there! Just seen on the news that a plane has crashed in a New York building and that fighter planes have been activated over several US cities! So its good we are now in Canada!

More about The Big Train Trip later.
